For Immediate Release
KANSAS AMBER ALERT? Not Oklahoma's
Problem! For those of you that are not aware of this fact Independence, Kansas is less than 20 miles from the Oklahoma border. What does this tidbit have to do with the title of this blog? This morning, 04/11/06, 17 year old Kelsey Stelting was abducted from her home at 6:30 this morning by gun point and forced into into a white van. She called 911 from her cell phone and told the authorities this information. Her mother was called and when she went outside she just found Kelsey's books scattered on the grass. An Amber alert went out immediately and when the State of Kansas contacted the State of Oklahoma and asked them to activate the Amber alert in their State (Kansas believes that the kidnapper(s) headed into Oklahoma), Oklahoma responded with, "She is not an Oklahoma citizen so it is not our problem." SAY WHAT? She is a child, that makes it everybody's problem. Why should this be surprising? After all we are talking about a State that allows people to outwardly break the law (tattooing when it is illegal), and looks the other way. Oklahoma officials stated that it is their policy to only issue an Amber alert for Oklahoma citizens. So these policy makers have allowed precious time to elapse when an alert might have recovered her or at the very least given law enforcement some leads. Way to go Oklahoma! Whoever the policy makers were who made this rule to not cooperate with their neighboring States during this type of crisis should be made to answer for that decision. The person who refused to issue the alert should be relieved of their position so that they have plenty of time to tuck their children in at night and make sure they are safe. Since they did not have enough caring to make sure someone else's child received the help they needed they will need to have plenty of time to think about what they have done. I hope they sleep well tonight! Am I mad? You bet I am and I will be sending an email to the Oklahoma Governor, all 101 members of the Oklahoma State Legislature and the Oklahoma Senate. I urge you to do the same. Here is a link to the website with their addresses: http://www.lsb.state.ok.us/ Go to the "House Members" and "Senate Directory" links. Keep your email brief with no slander. Just let them know how distressed you are with their lack of action and concern. Here is the link to the Amber Alert page with more information about the abduction of Kelsey. Please pray for her safe return. http://www.ksamber.org/srv-ksamber/showAlert.do?alert=381..latest “The Public Servant works for the people.
